Comtech Telecommunications Corp. Successfully Completes
U.S. Army Sponsored Testing of Its BFT-2 Next-Generation
Transceiver and Network Initiative
MELVILLE, N.Y., Jan 7, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX
News Network) -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq:CMTL)
announced today that its Maryland-based subsidiary,
Comtech Mobile Datacom Corporation (CMDC), successfully
completed U.S. Army sponsored field testing of its
BFT-HC ground mobile and aviation transceiver and network
solution, meeting or exceeding all JCR and BFT-2 specifications.
Comtech's BFT-HC transceiver and its enhanced network
capabilities together represent a significant technological
advance including the enabling of faster update rates
made possible by the newly released JCR software.
Comtech's BFT-HC solution is a commercial-off-the-shelf
or COTS product; however, its BFT-HC solution specifically
addresses the U.S. Army's warfighters' challenging
mobile environment. Comtech's BFT-HC solution integrates
leading edge antenna, signal processing and waveform
technologies while at the same time providing full
backward capability with the more than 100,000 first
generation Comtech-designed BFT satellite transceivers
previously deployed.
Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer
of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. stated, "Comtech's
BFT-HC equals BFT-2, and is ready for field deployment.
Comtech's offering provides the U.S. Army a unique
ability to seamlessly transition to BFT-2 by implementing
a staged upgrade cycle that eliminates the risk of
network disruption while minimizing the costs of operating
two different networks during a challenging budget
environment."
Dan Wood, CMDC's President added, "Our BFT-HC
products will allow the U.S. Army and other military
commands to build upon BFT's success over the past
six years during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and
Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). Comtech's entire
organization stands ready to support emerging and critical
U.S. military needs. Our approach to BFT-HC and BFT-2
targeted the mobile battlefield from the start. We
chose technology made specifically to handle the same
operational challenges experienced for many years by
our battle proven BFT-1 satellite communications network."
Comtech's BFT-HC aviation system is the first viable
BFT-2 compliant solution available to the aviation
community that meets the BFT-2's demanding size, weight
and power requirements. As a follow-on to this past
autumn's successful rotor blockage tests, Comtech completed
full aviation flight tests in December. The BFT-HC
aviation solution achieved outstanding performance
during all required flight maneuvers and at flight
speeds approaching 150 knots. Throughout these tests,
Comtech demonstrated full performance over the Inmarsat
I4 satellite using the BFT-1 blade antenna. With the
transceiver operating at 131 kbps, Comtech's enhanced
Core Network and adaptive multi-user detection (AMD)
ground station achieved unsurpassed performance and
reliability, demonstrating packet completion rates
exceeding the BFT-2 threshold performance levels. Comtech
also successfully demonstrated in-flight data rates
of 230 kbps with its advanced antenna.
